Choosing your Backpack
To choose the perfect bag or backpack for travel, you have to speak to the right people.
This is why we turned to The Luggage Professionals, who retail the best luggage brands and travel goods at the most competitive prices in Australia. They make sure your purchase is more than just a transaction – they have a range carefully curated to suit every travel need, they ship crazy fast and can answer every single question about their products’ usage and care.
As we’re on an extended trip and new to backpacking, it was essential we find comfortable, durable and functional bags, easy to use and carry. With this in mind, The Luggage Professionals guided us toward Osprey – a brand that aims to build innovative bags of the highest quality , designed to be used on mountain tops to remote islands and everything in between. Pretty perfect as at this moment we’re in the Azores, one of the most pristine archipelago of islands in the world.
Osprey Wayfarer 70 – The Stats
64 x 38 x 34cm, 70 litres, 2.46kg
First things first – we have to talk about the female-specific, padded hip belt, fully adjustable shoulder straps and the LightWire frame suspension on this bag, all of which is easily stowed. Combined, these three features have allowed us to customise our packs individually for our bodies, spreading the load for even weight distribution and ultimate comfort. For backpacking rookies like us, this is essential!
We love the Wayfarer’s Straight jacket compression system which secures and stabilises our load and locks our items in place for easier carriage.
The main compartment is accessed via a large duel zipped panel which allows us to open the bag all the way – this is ABSOLUTELY essential for every traveller.
To make things even easier there’s a top pocket ideal for items we need quick access to, such as our first aid kit, snacks, lip balm and sunscreen. There’s also a hidden compartment on the back of the pack where we’ve been hiding our passport and tickets.
The removable day pack that both zips and clips onto the backpack is a dream for transit in the air and on foot. This baby is perfect for day trips – it holds a deceptive amount – or as carry-on with a port window for a tablet and a padded laptop sleeve. Amazing!
For the intrepid:
Sleeping under the stars? No worries – the Wayfarer 70 has sleeping bag straps that can easily be stowed away when not in use.
Hikers will also be thankful for the breathable Spacer mesh covering the shoulder harness, hip belt and back panel for ventilation when traversing warmer climates. We might still occasionally look like sweaty snails trudging up hills in the midday sun, but the Wayfarer is making it as easy as it could possibly be!
After more than one month on the road, these backpacks have our seal of approval and we’re looking forward to many more together.
